Exponents are used to indicate how many times a base number should be taken as a factor.
The following diagram shows the parts of exponents:
The expression am above means take a as a factor m times. For example, 24 means take 2 as a factor 4 times:
2*2*2*2 = 8.
Be careful to NEVER multiply the base by the exponent. You must write out the base as a factor the number of times the exponent tells us to.
When we multiply, divide, or raise a power to another exponent, we follow the laws of exponents.
