Numerical Expressions

Page history last edited by Andrea Grieser 13 years, 8 months ago

A numerical expression is a mathematical phrase involving only numbers and opeational symbols.  Numerical expressions represent a numerical value.

Examples of numerical expressions:

  • 5
  • 4 + 20 - 7
  • (2 + 3) - 10 + (6/2)
  • (3 * 2)2 / 5

Numerical expressions are evaluated by performing the numerical operations described in numerical operation.  By convention,  we follow an order of operations when evaluating these expressions.

We need to be careful when identifying expressions.  The following mathematical sentence is not a numerical expression:

  • 6(3 - 4) / 52 = -6 / 25

The above sentence is an equation.  It is made up of two numerical expressions:   6(3 - 4) / 52 and -6 / 25.
