Polynomials

Page history last edited by Andrea Grieser 13 years, 7 months ago

A polynomial consists of a monomial, or a sum of monomials.

An example of a polynomial:  5x3 + 4x2 - 2x + 7

The degree of a polynomial is the highest degree of the monomials that make it up.

Polynomials made up of two terms are called binomials.  Polynomials made up of three terms are called trinomials.

In algebra I, we study in-depth polynomials of the following degrees:

Polynomial addition is done by collecting like termsPolynomial subtraction is done in a similar manner, but the negative sign of the subtraction must be distributed through what we are subtracting.

There are various methods available for multiplying polynomials.

We can also divide polynomials.

There are also various methods for factoring polynomials.  In Algebra I, we concentrate mostly on factoring second degree polynomials, also known as quadratic equations.

Here are some more resources about polynomials from our textbook.

These class notes provide further explanation and examples of adding, subtracting, and multiplying polynomials.
